What is COTREX?

The Colorado Trail Explorer (COTREX) is a FREE web and mobile trails application utilizing over 39,000 miles of public trails in Colorado. Residents and visitors can use COTREX to discover and navigate trails among 236 different land managers. Additionally, COTREX is built for all trail users, including hiking, mountain biking, equestrian riding, and motorized recreation. These are the reasons why COTREX is Colorado’s Official Trails App.

Timeline

The COTREX project began in 2016 as part of former Governor Hickenlooper’s Colorado the Beautiful Initiative. To bring this project to life, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) spent years seeking out and refining trails data. This culminated with a web-only version of COTREX the summer of 2017. The State contracted Natural Atlas in May of 2018 to further develop the state’s trails data and to build Android, iOS, and web browser versions of an interactive planning and navigation application. On Oct 30th, 2018, the apps were released to the public. Exciting new features, including satellite imagery and the ability to save personal routes, will be released at the end of April 2019.
